Annual Physical Q & A

Why do I need an annual physical?

Annual physicals are an important part of making sure you stay healthy throughout every stage of life. Physicals provide Dr. McKenzie with important information about your health. Having a physical every year enables Dr. McKenzie to compare health information from one year to the next so you can identify subtle signs of disease and receive treatment early before a disease has a chance to progress to more serious stages when permanent damage can occur. Plus, annual exams help ensure you receive important medical screenings, vaccinations, and other tests that are recommended for people at different ages.

What happens during an annual physical exam?

Annual physical exams begin with a complete medical history, including your history and the history of close relatives - usually your parents and grandparents - to help “spot” possible risk factors for disease and conditions. Then, you’ll have your weight and blood pressure measured and recorded. Dr. McKenzie will perform a series of “standard” evaluations, like listening to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope, gently palpating your belly and neck for signs of tenderness or swelling, checking your eyes, ears, and throat, and examining your joints. Other assessments also may be performed depending on your age and other risk factors. Dr. McKenzie might ask you to have blood work or other lab tests performed before your visit so the results can be discussed while you’re in the office. Evaluations such as an EKG might be performed or ordered as well. At the end of your visit, Dr. McKenzie will discuss any findings from your exam or tests and provide you with recommendations for other screenings, immunizations, or treatments, as well as lifestyle guidance and advice to help you enjoy better health. And of course, there will be time for you to ask questions about your health or your exam results.

Do I need to prepare for my exam?

Be ready to provide a complete medical history since that can play a big role in determining your risks for some disease and conditions. If lab tests are ordered ahead of time, be sure to have them completed two weeks or so before your appointment, so the results will be ready. If you take medicines - including daily aspirin, supplements, eye drops, or topical ointments or creams - either make a list of your doses or bring the bottles with you during the exam.
